I remember the first time I bought a futon cover set for my seats; I was so excited because the seat covers instantly transformed by worn out futons into new furniture pieces. However, I had not prepared myself for the responsibility that leather futon covers come with. They are equally prone to spills and dirt smudges just like all other fabric seat covers.
I was not accustomed to laundering leather-made products, because the leather seat covers were practically the only leather-made items which I owned. I was however able to pick up on a few tips on how to wash leather covers appropriately, to avoid damaging them and to make them last longer.

The Dab washing method
The first thing I did was to buy a leather friendly detergent and used a lightly dampened soft cloth to wipe through the leather covers. This worked well, especially when the seat covers needed a wipe-down after accumulating dust. I would then air-dry the covers and they would be ready to cover my seats once again in the shortest time possible.
Cleaning leather covers in a washer
I realized that my leather futon covers had a tag inside, like every piece of cloth does, which outlines the cleaning process. The particular set I had could be cleaned in a washer on the light-wash setting. I was however afraid that my covers would wear out with regular cleaning in the washer and so I decided to seek professional help.
Have your leather covers professionally laundered
It is best to take in your leather-made futon cover set for regular professional laundering. This ensures that they are clean enough to serve you as required, and you can maintain them with simple wipe-downs. However, it is also important to find a professional cleaner who specializes in cleaning leather fabrics.
Removing spots from the leather covers
Spots are every homeowner’s worst nightmare; they stubbornly set on the seat fabrics and getting rid of them is often quite tasking. In the case of mild spots, a simple sponging using leather-friendly detergent should wipe them right off. However, deeply set stains or extremely stubborn stains such as ink stains require the attention of a professional cleaner.
